Breaking the Cycle of Poor Sanitation – Nakere Village

In Nakere Village, Kaabong District, open defecation and poor hygiene practices once defined daily life. Without latrines or waste disposal systems, families faced constant outbreaks of diarrhoea and typhoid. The nearest government health facility was 10 km away, often without essential medicines, forcing residents to travel an additional 26 km to Kaabong Town for costly treatment. Most households spent a large share of their income on medical bills, leaving little for essentials like children’s education.

With the intervention of KAPDA, in partnership with GOAL Uganda, the community embraced a Community-Led Total Sanitation approach. Through powerful demonstrations and hygiene awareness sessions, residents saw firsthand the dangers of contamination and the direct link between poor sanitation and poor health.

Change began when local leaders and families took ownership of the problem. Village Health Team member, Koryang Simon, led by example by constructing his own latrine and inspiring neighbours to follow suit. Within weeks, dozens of households had built latrines, handwashing stations, and rubbish pits.

The results have been transformative:
Disease reduction – Cases of diarrhoea and typhoid dropped sharply.
Household savings – Families now use money once spent on medicine to purchase school supplies and meet other needs.
Safety and dignity – Women and girls no longer face the dangers of seeking isolated areas at night.

Nakere Village now stands as a model for sanitation-led community transformation, proof that with the right knowledge, tools, and support, lasting change is possible.

KAPDA’s vision is simple but powerful: Healthy homes, educated children, and communities where dignity is restored.
