North Karamoja Poverty Alleviation Project (NK-PAP) – Breaking the Cycle of Poverty, Restoring Hope
In North Karamoja, poverty is more than a lack of income—it is a lack of opportunity, resources, and hope. Many households, especially those headed by women, persons with disabilities, and youth, struggle to meet basic needs. The North Karamoja Poverty Alleviation Project (NK-PAP), implemented by the Karamoja Peace and Development Agency (KAPDA) with support from development partners, is providing the tools and opportunities communities need to build a better future.
What We Do
NK-PAP addresses poverty through a multi-pronged approach that empowers vulnerable households to increase income, improve livelihoods, and access essential services:
-
Skills Development – Training in practical trades such as tailoring, livestock rearing, agriculture, and small-scale retail.
-
Support for Persons with Disabilities – Provision of mobility aids, inclusive vocational training, and advocacy for disability rights.
-
Livelihood Inputs – Seeds, tools, and startup kits to launch income-generating activities.
-
Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLA) – Encouraging saving habits and providing access to small loans for business growth.
-
Life Skills Training – Building confidence, communication, problem-solving, and financial literacy.
Our Impact
-
Hundreds of households have launched sustainable income-generating activities, reducing dependency on aid.
-
Persons with disabilities, once isolated, are now actively participating in community life and business.
-
Increased food security through improved agricultural practices and livestock management.
-
Greater resilience to economic shocks, especially during dry seasons.
Stories of Change
Christine, a young woman living with a disability, received mobility aids and vocational training through NK-PAP. Today, she not only supports herself but also advocates for the rights of persons with disabilities in her community.
In Timu Sub-County, NK-PAP beneficiaries formed a tailoring cooperative, reducing the need to purchase clothing from distant towns and creating a steady local income source.
