Sustainable WASH (SWASH-09) Initiatives – Building Healthier, Safer, and Resilient Communities
In rural Karamoja, access to clean water, safe sanitation, and proper hygiene is not a given—it’s a daily struggle. Many families walk long distances for unsafe water, while open defecation remains a common practice, fueling preventable diseases like diarrhea and typhoid. The Sustainable WASH (SWASH-09) Initiatives, implemented by the Karamoja Peace and Development Agency (KAPDA) with support from GOAL, are changing this reality through community-driven solutions.
What We Do
Our approach combines infrastructure, education, and behavior change to create lasting improvements in Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH):
-
Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) – Triggering communities to take ownership of hygiene improvements and achieve Open Defecation Free (ODF) status.
-
Safe Water Access – Constructing and rehabilitating boreholes, piped water systems, and protected springs.
-
Household Sanitation Facilities – Supporting the construction of latrines, handwashing stations, drying racks, rubbish pits, and bathing shelters.
-
Hygiene Promotion – Training Village Health Teams (VHTs) and Community Conversation Facilitators (CCFs) to lead ongoing awareness campaigns.
-
Gender and Safety Integration – Ensuring women and girls have safe, private facilities, reducing risks of harassment and improving dignity.
Our Impact
-
Over 250 latrines constructed and 219 safe water points established, serving thousands of people.
-
Significant reduction in diarrheal and waterborne diseases in targeted communities like Nakere and Kaloula Villages.
-
Improved school attendance as children stay healthier and spend less time collecting water.
-
Strengthened community ownership, with local leaders actively monitoring hygiene practices.
Stories of Change
In Nakere Village, the CLTS approach inspired 49 households to build and use their own latrines within weeks. Cases of typhoid and diarrhea have dropped sharply, freeing up household income for education and food.
In Kaloula Village, latrine coverage rose to 80% within months, with handwashing facilities transforming daily hygiene habits. One mother proudly shared that her children now go months without falling sick.
Why SWASH-09 Needs You
While progress is real, the demand is still enormous. Many villages remain without clean water, and climate change threatens existing sources. Your support can help us:
-
Expand WASH infrastructure to more underserved communities.
-
Provide affordable water purification solutions.
-
Fund borehole rehabilitation and climate-resilient water systems.
-
Train more community health champions to sustain the gains.
When you fund SWASH-09, you’re not just providing water—you’re saving lives, restoring dignity, and building a healthier future for Karamoja.
