Advocacy through Community Conversations (CC) – Voices Driving Change in Karamoja
In Karamoja, many challenges—poor health services, unsafe water, inadequate sanitation, and limited education access—persist because communities have little platform to raise concerns and hold leaders accountable.
Advocacy through Community Conversations (CC), implemented by the Karamoja Peace and Development Agency (KAPDA), is giving communities that platform—transforming passive recipients into active agents of change.
What We Do
Community Conversations create safe, inclusive spaces where residents meet regularly to discuss problems, propose solutions, and take collective action. Our approach includes:
-
Training Community Conversation Facilitators (CCFs) – Local volunteers equipped with advocacy, leadership, and mobilization skills.
-
Regular Dialogue Sessions – Held twice a month to address pressing issues in sanitation, health, water, and education.
-
Collective Action Planning – Communities develop and implement action plans to solve identified problems.
-
Leadership Engagement – Bringing local leaders, service providers, and citizens together to co-create solutions.
-
Accountability Tracking – Monitoring promises made by leaders to ensure commitments are delivered.
Our Impact
-
In Kaloula Village, CC sessions mobilized households to build latrines and achieve Open Defecation Free (ODF) status within months.
-
In Sidok Sub-County, community pressure through CC meetings resulted in the rapid delivery of essential drugs to Kopoth Health Centre III after months of shortage.
-
Improved cooperation between residents and local authorities, leading to tangible service improvements.
Stories of Change
Lotuk Abraham, a CCF in Kaloula, recalls how CC meetings shifted community priorities from sanitation to healthcare after achieving ODF status. Their advocacy secured malaria drugs within just eight days—saving lives and restoring trust in local health services.
Why Community Conversations Need You
Karamoja’s rural communities have solutions to their challenges—they only need the tools and platforms to act. Your support can help us:
-
Train more Community Conversation Facilitators in underserved areas.
-
Provide meeting materials, awareness tools, and transport allowances for facilitators.
-
Link community groups to decision-makers and development partners.
-
Expand CC to address emerging issues like climate change and youth unemployment.
When you fund Community Conversations, you amplify the voices of those who matter most—the people living the challenges and driving the change.
