A Dream Stitched to Reality – Nachiam Faridah

In the remote village of Lokinene, opportunities for young women are scarce, and dreams often remain just that—dreams. For Nachiam Faridah, a 23-year-old mother of a three-year-old boy, life was defined by poverty, limited education, and the daily struggle to provide for her family. She often imagined herself as a tailor, creating beautiful clothes and earning a decent living, but with no skills, training, or support, it seemed impossible.

That changed when KAPDA mobilized adolescent girls in her community to join the Bonga programme. At first, Faridah was uncertain, questioning the value of life skills training. But with encouragement from her group’s animator, she persevered—trusting that the training would open doors.

When the time came for the group to choose an income-generating activity, tailoring emerged as the top choice. For Faridah, it was more than a decision—it was the chance she had been waiting for. She embraced the training with enthusiasm, quickly mastering the skills to design, cut, and sew garments.

Within months, Faridah and her group were producing dresses, skirts, and shirts for their community. What once required a 35-kilometer trip to Kaabong Town could now be made locally. The demand grew, and with it, Faridah’s confidence and income.

Today, she supports her family financially, emotionally, and morally. She has transformed from a young mother with no prospects into a breadwinner and a role model, inspiring other girls to believe in themselves and pursue their dreams.

Faridah’s story is proof that with skills, opportunity, and support, dreams can be stitched into reality.
