Girls Improving Resilience through Livelihoods and Health (GIRL-H) – Empowering Karamoja’s Next Generation of Women Leaders

In Karamoja, adolescent girls and young women often face a life shaped by poverty, early marriage, and limited education. Many lack the skills, resources, and confidence to pursue their ambitions. The Girls Improving Resilience through Livelihoods and Health (GIRL-H) programme, implemented by the Karamoja Peace and Development Agency (KAPDA) with support from partners, is changing this reality by equipping girls with the tools to thrive economically, socially, and in health.

What We Do

GIRL-H is a holistic programme designed to break cycles of poverty and vulnerability by building self-reliance, resilience, and health awareness among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW). Our approach includes:

  • Life Skills Training – Confidence building, communication, financial literacy, and decision-making skills.

  • Vocational Skills Development – Tailoring, beadwork, bakery, agriculture, and other income-generating trades.

  • Sexual and Reproductive Health Education – Knowledge on menstrual health, family planning, and HIV prevention.

  • Health & Hygiene Promotion – Training in proper hygiene practices to prevent disease and reduce school absenteeism.

  • Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLA) – Providing a safe platform for girls to save, access small loans, and invest in their futures.

Our Impact

  • Over 900 adolescent girls trained in life and vocational skills, enabling them to earn an income and support their families.

  • Significant reduction in early marriage and teenage pregnancy rates in targeted communities.

  • Improved menstrual hygiene management in schools, reducing absenteeism among girls.

  • Young women starting successful micro-enterprises, from tailoring shops to market gardens.

Stories of Change

Faridah, once unable to support herself or her child, now runs a thriving tailoring business after vocational training through GIRL-H. She provides for her family, mentors other girls, and contributes to her community’s economy.

In Lokinene, a group of young women trained under GIRL-H established a bakery that now serves as a reliable source of income and inspiration for other AGYW.

Why GIRL-H Needs You

Investing in girls is investing in the future. When girls are empowered, they uplift families, transform communities, and drive local development. Your support can help us:

  • Reach more out-of-school girls in remote areas.

  • Provide startup kits for vocational graduates.

  • Expand health education to tackle emerging challenges.

  • Strengthen mentorship networks for ongoing guidance.

With GIRL-H, every girl gains the skills, knowledge, and resilience to create her own path to success and inspire others to follow.
